November 2010 Newsletter

Hello, and welcome to the Happy November 2010 DreamHost Newsletter!

I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that 1200 people unsubscribed from the newsletter last month.

They're gone! Splitsville! Vamoosed. Truly, I am overjoyed.

It means that I can now, finally, let you in on a little secret:

Yes, you.

You are wonderful.

I've always liked you.

New Orange County Office!

We've got three offices (not datacenters) in California. One's in Downtown Los Angeles, one's in Brea, and one's in San Francisco.

Our lease in Brea was up, we had run out of office space a few months earlier, and so at the end of the summer we packed up our things and moved across town.

I would love to regale you with tales of our landlord throwing our clothes out the window and screaming at us in Italian as we walked out of the office for the last time, but sadly nothing quite so exciting happened.

I mean, I'm pretty sure that was a dream. You never really know, though.

When it came time to find some new office space we really spent a lot of time looking for something that was big enough to house not only the people we had, but also the people we planned to add over the next few years.

Once we found a building that looked promising and had enough space for us, we signed a lease and began the hunt for a designer.

It was a quick search.

Studio O+a

After seeing the work that Studio O+a did on Facebook's recent office design, we availed ourselves of their services...and just a few months later we had a shiny new office!

Come take a look!

See The New Office

We've been here for a little while and all of the finishing touches are finally in place.

You may notice more than a few empty desks in those photos. Which leads me to my next point...

Hiring Continues!

Since last month's newsletter we've posted ten NEW job openings on our website, have conducted countless interviews, and have hired one new employee. We are hiring for seventeen jobs in total, and still more are on the way, so there's a good chance we'll never fill them all by the end of the year. But man oh man we are trying! If you haven't un-followed us on Twitter by now then, well, you're a true friend.

Get a Job!

We're looking for WordPress developers, general managers, knowledge managers, marketing managers...you name it. You could probably just MAKE UP a title and we'd hire you to do it!

"Director of Corporate Synergy"?

"Vice President of Risk Mitigation and Multi-Level Systems Analysis"?

Sounds good to me!

"Brett's Personal Neck and Shoulder Massager"?

If you know anyone in the Southern California area who could use a job, we could use your help! And theirs. Except I guess it's not really "help" if we're paying them. Once money changes hands, it's more like a job. Which actually is what we're offering. And so we've come full circle. What was I talking about again?

DreamHost 101: Personal Backups!

All of our hosting plans include an unlimited amount of disk space and bandwidth. When people hear that, a lot of them tend to think "Oh ho! I can use my account to backup my entire home computer! Marvelous!" Then they twirl their moustache, adjust their monocle, and go back to petting a hairless cat.

Well, it's actually not so marvelous. The way it works in the hosting world is that having "unlimited web space" *does* mean exactly that - you've got an unlimited amount...of web space. It doesn't mean you can upload your entire years-in-the-making digital music collection onto your DreamHost account.

For starters, you and I both know that 90% of the music in that collection was obtained through no-so-legal means.

And for two, your taste in music is simply not worth preserving. Sorry, but you deserved to hear it from a friend.

After running into this issue time and time again, we decided on our current "Unlimited + 50GB" disk space policy. So while you can use as much disk space as you need to to support and run your web sites with us, we also give you 50GB of disk space to use for your own personal backups. No other host in the industry does this.

Unlimited + 50GB

To get started, you simply need to create a special "Backups" user account. It's quick, it's easy, and you can begin assaulting our servers with your Neil Diamond obsession in a matter of minutes.

50 GB is a lot to fill.

New Charity

For the last six months we've been accepting donations on behalf of The March of Dimes.

March of Dimes

40 of our customers up-ended their wallets and shook them around to see what came out. When the lint settled and the gum wrappers were thrown away we tallied everything up and were left with $1965.42.

We've since applied our own quadruple-match and have made a donation to The March of Dimes for $7861.68!

Our next donation target is The Planetary Society.

The Planetary Society

Founded in 1980 by a trio of space enthusiasts including the late, great Carl Sagan, The Planetary Society's purpose is to inspire and involve the world's public in space exploration through advocacy, projects, and education.

If you're not feeling very inspired to involve yourself in the giving process, go watch some of those Symphony of Science videos and then see how you feel. Because they're great.

Symphony of Science

If auto-tuned astrophysicists don't inspire you to loosen your purse strings then you are clearly a robot with no sense of wonder or imagination.

Take a Survey, Win an iPad!

It's survey time!

This month we're looking for some general information about you. We're not digging too deep here - this is more in the vein of nervous first-date chit-chat. If things take a turn for the worse you can just pretend that you got an important phone call and close the browser window. Trust us, it happens all the time.

One lucky survey taker will receive an Apple iPad for their time. It's a 16GB Wi-Fi (USA) version, and it's due to become obsolete any day now, so you'd better help us get rid of it QUICK.

See ya next month!

Friend forever,
Brett D!
